![]() The Paris Agreement sets long-term goals to guide all nations to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 ☌ while pursuing efforts to limit the increase even further to 1.5 ☌. Arctic warming is disproportionately high and what happens in the Arctic affects all of us,” said Prof. And alongside that, our oceans will continue to become warmer and more acidic, sea ice and glaciers will continue to melt, sea level will continue to rise and our weather will become more extreme. “For as long as we continue to emit greenhouse gases, temperatures will continue to rise. It is rather an indicator of the point at which climate impacts will become increasingly harmful for people and indeed the entire planet,” said WMO Secretary-General Prof. The 1.5☌ figure is not some random statistic. ![]() “This study shows – with a high level of scientific skill – that we are getting measurably closer to temporarily reaching the lower target of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. That probability has increased to nearly 50% for the 2022-2026 period. For the years between 20, there was a 10% chance of exceedance. The chance of temporarily exceeding 1.5☌ has risen steadily since 2015, when it was close to zero. The annual update harnesses the expertise of internationally acclaimed climate scientists and the best prediction systems from leading climate centers around the world to produce actionable information for decision-makers. The chance of the five-year average for 2022-2026 being higher than the last five years (2017-2021) is also 93%, according to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, produced by the UK’s Met Office, the WMO lead centre for such predictions. There is a 93% likelihood of at least one year between 2022-2026 becoming the warmest on record and dislodging 2016 from the top ranking. The report was prepared by a team of 11 different forecast centers, including the UK’s Meteorological Office, for the WMO on Monday. There is a 50:50 chance of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5 ☌ above the pre-industrial level for at least one of the next five years – and the likelihood is increasing with time, according to a new climate update issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). ![]() Share on WhatsApp Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Telegram Share on Reddit Share on Email ![]()

![]() On the AppStore, Metacore Games - the Finnish studio responsible for Merge Mansion - describe the game as a “mysterious puzzle” with “decade-old family secrets” as “Maddie’s grandmother has something to tell”. Despite the ads making the game look like it could be a Cluedo-esque murder adventure, Merge Mansion just has you cleaning up yards and garages virtually. Instead, Merge Mansion is just a Candy Crush-style match-three puzzle game about cleaning a house - well, a mansion to be specific. But if you were sucked in by the Merge Mansion ad and actually downloaded the game, you know that there is no fraud involved. Personally, I’m all for drama and I love chaos. Did granny burn down the first house? Why did the new house look exactly the same as the original home? Was grandma trying to commit insurance fraud? Also, why was the woman left at the altar and returning back in a cab without family around her? And why wasn’t granny invited to the wedding? Plus, how self-obsessed is this woman for her not to notice her missing husband until the wedding day and not ask any questions about it?! Now, firstly, what the fuck? And secondly, did this old lady kill a man? As the cop car drives away, grandma smirks and reveals the message on her hand: “He is alive”. Then granny suddenly gets taken away in handcuffs with no explanation. We see that “grandma” confronts the sad bride, gives her a key to a fixer-upper, and together they build the house of her dreams. ![]() ![]() And despite the ad only rolling for 57 seconds, we get a thriller film full of twists and turns. ![]() But we see a distraught woman in a wedding dress come home to her house on fire. ![]() ![]() The derogatory military slang term Charlie to refer to the Viet Cong is said to come from Victor Charlie. The famous "Checkpoint Charlie" in the days of the Berlin Wall was actually Checkpoint C. There has been some small influence of spelling alphabets in everyday English. For example, Golf is, I assume, a more recognizable term internationally than George. But the current selection of words is understandable as the result of the internationalization effort. This was particularly noticeable to me as I was learning the alphabet, because exceptions - Golf, Hotel, November - were harder to learn and had an odd effect on the rhythm of the spelling. Another notable feature is that most of the words are disyllable trochees (AL-pha, BRA-vo, CHAR-lie, etc.). To that purpose, there are language-specific versions of this alphabet (like German) that have extra words for letters like ä, ö, and ü.Īs I've been learning this, it struck me that the current alphabet consists almost entirely of multi-syllabic words contrast this alphabet with the earlier one above. An additional challenge was to accommodate letters that were not in English. The challenge in developing the alphabet was to meet the criteria I listed earlier and to use words that non-English speakers would be able to speak and understand and that that did not have wildly different pronunciations in different languages. This was adopted in the 1950s and is still standard today here are the letters: After WWII, American and Western European countries settled on what's known as the NATO phonetic alphabet (as I say, not a correct term). Over time it became obvious that it would be useful to standardize on a single such alphabet. During WWII, for example, the US military used a spelling alphabet that began with Able-Baker-Charlie, which might be familiar still to people who went through that conflict (or who love movies set in that time period). Spelling alphabets evolved independently in different branches of the military and in different countries. One of the early English phonetic alphabets ( from 1913) used these words: For example, you wouldn't want to use A=Able and T=Table or B=Bear and F=Fare (or Fair). It must also use words that are phonetically distinct from one another. ![]() Your alphabet must use simple, short words. Imagine for a moment that you've been assigned to come up with a phonetic alphabet for English. (As those of us of a certain age can remember, pre-digital radio was notoriously subject to static and interference.) Signaling individual letters had of course long been established in the navy, and so spelling alphabets evolved to have a distinct word for each letter. The idea was further developed with the spread of radio technology. ![]() This was an early version:Īck Beer C D E F G H I J K L Emma N O Pip Q R Esses Toc U Vic W X Y Z ![]() Initial attempts in the British Army in the 19th century simply assigned alternative names to letters that were frequently misheard. Since the military is very interested in communication, and because they often work under auditorially challenging conditions (such as, say, during battle), spelling alphabets have mostly come from the military. Even if you've never been in the military or gotten a radio license or studied flying, you've probably heard people use a spelling alphabet on TV or in a movie.Īs you can imagine, spelling alphabets were developed for precisely the reason I noted - spelling out loud is fraught, what with all the letters that sound similar (e.g., B, E, P, T, D) and the many vagaries of auditory communication. A spelling alphabet consists of words (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, etc.) that represent alphabetic characters. This might be one reason that I've developed an interest in the idea of so-called spelling alphabets (frequently referred to, incorrectly, as phonetic alphabets). Even spelling it out doesn't help - P-O-P-E - and I find myself exaggerating the aspiration on those plosives. "Hope?" This is particularly true over the telephone. My name - Pope - is surprisingly easy to mishear. Mike Pope, a technical editor at Microsoft, writes: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Macbeth’s castle seems hewn out of the very cliffside, its hallways nothing more than slimy caverns. As Citizen Kane leapt back and forth in time, and as The Lady from Shanghai served up a world-sized Crazy House in which Michael O’Hara was perpetually caught at a disadvantage by the shifting, ever-changing camera angles as much as by Elsa’s machinations, so does Macbeth extend Welles’s experiments with a world whose topography and geography puzzles the eye and mind. The whole film serves as a kind of mirror to Macbeth’s own consciousness. The witches appear, plunge their hands into their cauldron, bringing up mud and forming it into a voodoo-like Macbeth doll that will reappear to help convey the dagger scene and the beheading of Macbeth by Macduff as Charles Higham notes in a rare moment of complex apprehension: “In its crumbling, decaying, but at the same time formatory shapelessness, the face is at once a mirror and a death mask.” He summarizes the opening movements of the drama, some of which we shall witness anyway, as we witness the events condensed in the obituary newsreel of Charles Foster Kane. Welles’s voice speaks to us of “Ancient Scotland lost in the mist that hangs between recorded history and the time of legend.” He speaks of the old being displaced by the new, superstition and black magic reluctantly giving ground before the advent of a Christianity that, for what we see of it later, seems scarcely less barbaric. As with Ambersons, the director’s voice speaks of a vanished age, and the darkness is replaced by endless vistas of heaving fog that may cover land or may as easily be cloudscapes: certainly the landscape is one of dream not dissimilar to the Xanadu scenes at the beginning of Kane. Its opening is superb and marks the film as unmistakably Welles’s own. Small wonder that Welles forsook Hollywood following this experience and began filming on the Continent by hook or crook.īut Macbeth deserves to be remembered for more than its production history and overall failure. The soundtrack of the present Macbeth includes material from all the endeavors, so that Duncan and (at first) Malcolm are still heard burring away. Welles wasn’t around he delivered his own new lines from London, and production assistants Richard Wilson and William Alland (Kane’s Thompson, also the Second Murderer here) coordinated the various tracks as best they could. Actors were called back for re-dubbing some of it in clear English, some in purest American. ![]() The technique wore heavily on the players and the sound of the dialogue displeased the producers and the first preview audiences: it was delivered with a heavy Scots burr. Not the least of the difficulties during shooting was that Welles had pre-recorded the soundtrack and asked the actors to synchronize their on-camera performances with their former readings (a method attempted on The Magnificent Ambersons but abandoned almost immediately). With an awesome surge of creative energy and organizational genius, he came in on schedule, although he begged in vain for another two days in which to do some retakes. He had a slightly larger budget than he’d enjoyed on Kane, but his shooting schedule was staggering: a mere 21 days. To be specific on production matters, Welles made Macbeth at Republic Studios, a company that specialized in westerns and action flicks. He had once considered Macbeth for his cinematic debut, remarking in 1940 that “ Macbeth and its gloomy moors might be grand” for the movies: “A perfect cross between Wuthering Heights and The Bride of Frankenstein.” But when he came to make the film some seven years later, he was to enjoy nothing like the production resources behind the Goldwyn–Wyler Wuthering Heights and-save for isolated passages that fairly leap out of the body of the film-he seemed curiously paralyzed, his style grown monotonously murky and overbearingly static, as though he had yet to grasp the full implications of The Lady from Shanghai: little of Macbeth is on a par with its predecessors in the Welles canon or, for that matter, with the extravagant cinematic imagination of James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein. Welles’s last American film of the Forties was not a happy experience. ![]() In anticipation of that May 2-8 engagement, Parallax View presents… Othello The original text remains essentially unaltered, with references to earlier Welles films the series-goers would have seen and, at the outset, one they had not. In anticipation of that, Parallax View presents a detailed program note written when Othello appeared in an autumn 1971 film series devoted to Welles on the University of Washington campus. Northwest Film Forum is about to showcase a new 4K restoration of Orson Welles’s Othello, one of the director’s greatest-and rarest-films. ![]() ![]() Please read the FAQ carefully for processing time. ![]() Please be sure to check variants before buying* Please be sure to measure your nails accurately, we are not responsible if you order the wrong nail size.
